I, along with my collaborators from the Center for Healthcare Quality at the University of South Carolina, have published a review of faith-based HIV prevention interventions as a resource for public health and behavioral health intervention development within faith communities in the US. Faith communities in the US are diverse and sociopolitically powerful, and have a demonstrable and ongoing impact on the health and well-being of many communities in the US — particularly under-resourced and minoritized communities. Published academic literature indicates that there are many strengths in faith-based HIV prevention interventions that have been observed by previous research partnerships, like the ability to co-develop and tailor interventions aligned with communities’ values — but that these partnerships very rarely discuss harm reduction efforts, like promoting safer sex, in favor of discussing abstinence-based approaches to prevention.
