The paper describes the important work that musicians feel poised to do in promoting harm reduction efforts not only in their local communities, but also within their respective scenes. Musicians describe the facilitators of harm reduction efforts led by musicians, including their non-judgment that can support de-stigmatizing substance use and proximity to risky use, as well as the challenges facing their own communities — from interpersonal pressures and scene dynamics to local policies and sociocultural norms. This work represents the early stages of development of assessing the resources needed to support lay harm reduction education and use among hospitality industry professionals, and is guiding the team’s current work in developing a framework of expected change that can positively shape harm reduction efforts within the music scene in Midlands South Carolina.
